The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport says it’s gearing up to host yet another instalment of the Western Cape Big Walk.
The provincial government Department announced the dates of this year’s Big Walk with a collective call for members of the public to register to participate in the walkathon event to be held early next month October 6, 2024.
In a statement, the Department which hosts the walk in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and the Western Province Athletics confirmed that the free event would once more be held in Rondebosch.
Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Rickardo Mackenzie said that the Big Walk aims to promote active lifestyles and highlight the importance of mental well-being.
Participants can choose between a 5km which starts at 8.15 am on Sunday or a 10km walk which starts at 8am.
Meanwhile, the two walking events are open to entrants of all ages and fitness levels.
“The Big Walk is for all persons who want to celebrate physical activity and mental wellbeing are encouraged to take part in this event, which emphasises our commitment as the Western Cape Government to encouraging communities to be more active,” Mackenzie said.
He said: “Every morning I choose to be active and get outside for a walk or bicycle ride. Every step together moves us towards a stronger and more cohesive community. We will not only walk our way to better health but to a better South Africa.”
Participants of the Big Walk also stand the chance to win various prizes.
Walkers who also sign up for the event will also be joining a global awareness campaign as the event coincides with The Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) World Walking Day Initiative.
“The DCS calls on all South Africans to come join the walk. So put on your takkies, tie those shoelaces firmly and join us for the 2024 Western Cape Big Walk,” Mackenzie said.
