In an exhilarating development for motorsport fans, Boundless Motorsport confirmed on Tuesday that a major undertaking to bring Formula 1 racing back to South Africa is underway, with ambitious plans for a Grand Prix set to unfold at what has been dubbed the Best City in the World: Cape Town.

The proposed project, supported by both US funding and the Western Cape Government, aims to establish the Boundless Cape Town Grand Prix Circuit, a cutting-edge racetrack designed to cater not only to Formula 1 but also to other high-octane motorsports. Planned as a greenfields venture, the circuit will accommodate a staggering 125,000 spectators, transforming the landscape of motorsport in the region.

Promising an unparalleled spectator experience, the multi-purpose circuit will boast certification from both the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). More than just a racetrack, the Boundless Circuit is envisioned as part of a broader entertainment complex, which will include a community centre, retail areas, hospitality venues, and an amphitheatre for outdoor events and concerts.

Iconic landmarks

Designed to enhance accessibility, the circuit will feature multiple entry points and ample parking, with facilities for RV and caravan camping to accommodate fans from all walks of life. Those attending will enjoy stunning views of iconic landmarks including Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Town Harbour, and the majestic Table Mountain, making this Grand Prix not just a sporting event but a destination for tourists.

This high-profile initiative is backed by the Dallas-based US Boundless Racing, which is partnering with local authorities and the provincial government to ensure a successful bid. The project will be managed by Race Makers, a multinational consortium of experts in Formula 1, motorsport, and events, highlighting the significant investment in talent and resources needed to deliver excellence on this grand stage.

Potential benefits

Proposals are already advancing with Formula One Management (FOM), the regulatory body for MotoGP, and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture in South Africa, underscoring the collaborative effort behind the scenes. The strategic alignment of local businesses with national and international corporations aims to create a sound economic foundation for the event, promising not just excitement on the track but also revitalisation for the local economy.

As excitement builds around the prospect of an annual Formula 1 event in Cape Town, industry insiders express optimism about the potential benefits. “Our aim is to present an independent, compelling, and viable bid for hosting Formula 1 in the Western Cape,” stated a spokesperson from Boundless Motorsport, emphasising their commitment to surpassing every requirement set by both FIA and Formula 1 standards.

While more details are set to be unveiled in due course, the vision for Cape Town as a racing capital presents a thrilling opportunity not just for fans, but for the community as a whole.
