A man and a woman have been arrested during an intelligence driven operation by AGU, the Anti-Gang Unit at a storage facility in Bellville South and Stikland where a cache of firearms, drugs, ammunition, and six M26 hand grenades was found.
The two, aged 41 and 47 are expected to make an appearance soon in court on charges of the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and drugs as well as the possession of illegal explosives.
Police are confident that as the investigation continues, that more arrests will be imminent.
The success follows weeks of observing the movements at the storage facility.
The operation was carried out on Monday and was a multi-disciplinary team comprising Anti Gang Unit investigators, Crime Intelligence (Counter Gangs and Narcotics) and Visible Policing Anti Gang Unit members, who swooped on storage facilities in Bellville South and Stikland on Monday evening.
On the first location in Bellville South, the following was found: 3 X AK 47 rifles, 1 X R 5, 1 X assault rifle, 12 X 9mm pistols, 3 X Uzzi, 4 X shotguns, 2 X revolvers, 50 000 X Mandrax tablets, 6 X M26 grenades, large quantity of an assortment of rounds of ammunition (counting continues).
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the operation took the team later in the evening to another storage facility in Stikland where a package containing two kilograms of heroin was confiscated.
“The efforts of the team have been commended by SAPS management as the Western Cape battles shooting incidents that result in murder and attempted murder cases,” she said.
It has yet to be revealed which gang or criminal syndicate this cache is linked to.
A source close to the investigation said this is what police are now working on, to secure more arrests and convictions in the future.
