London - They had come to get close to nature. But as an antelope was savaged by a pair of lions inches from their cars, these tourists must have felt a little too close for comfort.
The dramatic photos, at South Africa’s Kruger National Park, were taken two months after American Katherine Chappell was mauled to death by a lion that dragged her through the window of a car near Johannesburg.
Most of the tourists in the latest pictures kept their windows tightly shut – although one reckless sightseer was seen with her arm dangling out of the vehicle.
undefinedPhotographer Carolyn Dunford, 23, from Romsey in Hampshire, said: “The kudu [a type of antelope] burst from the bushes and the lions chased it. The first lion grabbed on to its back and the second came in and grabbed its throat. They both tackled it.”
Miss Dunford, an intern at a veterinary research centre at the park in the north-east of the country, added: “As a biologist, I understand the circle of life.
“For me it was really fascinating to watch a lion hunt. It’s a privilege to see it happen and the power of the lions. It was amazing.
“I love being right in the heart of the action.”
