Tshwane metro police team all set to participate in Comrades Marathon

Pretoria - The Tshwane Metro Police Department's (TMPD) running team will be showing that they are more than up to the challenge to protect and serve, as they get ready to participate in the upcoming Comrades Marathon.

The department announced that it was proud that its running team would be participating in the 89km ultra-marathon taking place in KwaZulu-Natal this coming Sunday.

Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, the departmental spokesperson said the department’s team had been participating in the Comrades Marathon since 2016 and had through the years had members who were able to complete the race in under 9 hours, with others coming in under the limit of 12 hours.

Mahamba said this year 23 members would be participating in the Comrades race, with 18 members to accompany them to support and cheer the team on.

"This goes to show that the TMPD also cares for and supports the fitness and well-being of its employees."

"TMPD members are encouraged to keep fit by participating in the different sporting codes available within the department and running is among the different sporting codes."

The spokesperson said the department would like to wish the members well, as they set out to make the department, their families as well as the entire City of Tshwane proud.

The race is run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, with it being the world's largest and oldest ultra-marathon race.

After completion of the official route measurement conducted by the Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) Route Portfolio, Road Traffic Inspectorate, Msunduzi Traffic, eThekwini Metro and the Department of Transport, the Race Director, Rowyn James confirmed that the official race distance of this year’s Comrades Marathon down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban would be 89.885km.
