The pressing need for student accommodation in Tshwane’s inner-city remains a top priority, according to MMC for Housing and Human Settlements, Aaron Maluleka.
He said an urgent need for student accommodation was because of several institutions of higher education in the City and some with multiple campuses.
Recently, Maluleka joined the Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, at the launch of the Ha Bo Rena student accommodation at 459 Hanny Street, Pretoria Gardens.
He expressed gratitude with the expansion of the affordable student accommodation project, which is part of the work conducted by the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Gauteng Partnership Fund (GPF).
“The launch of the student accommodation marks a significant step forward in addressing the growing need for quality, affordable student housing in Tshwane,” he said.
The Ha Bo Rena student accommodation is a government flagship project aimed at providing a safe, modern and conducive living environment for students pursuing higher education.
Maluleka said the facility is designed to foster academic excellence while supporting the well-being of students.
“The GPF, as an agency of the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements, has been tasked with providing affordable human settlements in Gauteng. This includes addressing the need for student accommodation and aligning with the Department of Higher Education and Training’s concern for student housing,” he said.
Motara talked about the importance of such developments in achieving the City’s broader human settlements agenda.
She said: “This project exemplifies how public-private partnerships and integrated planning can address critical housing needs while also uplifting the community. By providing students with access to dignified accommodation, we are investing in their future and the future of our city.”
The Ha Bo Rena launch, according to Maluleka, aligns with the City’s commitment to the development of sustainable human settlements and the strategic goals outlined in its integrated development programme.
