The City’s first-of-its-kind Domestic Animal Survey is now underway, aiming to create a comprehensive baseline of the domestic animal population.
The data collected will help shape future planning, policies, and resources for animal welfare initiatives across the metropole.
This survey is the latest in a series of efforts by the City to prioritise and enhance animal welfare. Existing initiatives include:
- Established by-laws on responsible pet ownership
- A dedicated Animal Control Unit within Law Enforcement
- Over a decade of City-funded mass sterilisation campaigns in partnership with the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF)
- The formation of an anti-dog fighting task team
- A memorandum of understanding for the impoundment of dangerous or distressed animals
Why This Survey Matters
By gaining a clearer picture of Cape Town’s domestic animal population, officials say they aim to use the information to assess whether current measures are effective or if adjustments are needed in funding, legislation, and support for the animal welfare sector.
Over the next six weeks, both pet owners and the general public are encouraged to participate.
The survey can be completed online at https://bit.ly/4bPScdI or in person, as field workers visit communities to gather responses.
"A healthy animal population is vital for public health and safety. While the City has made significant progress in animal welfare, there is always room for improvement.
"This survey will provide valuable insights into pet care trends, population size, and vaccination and sterilisation rates, helping us refine our approach for the future," said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
