Busisiwe Mndebele went from serving meals to graduating from Wits University, demonstrating that hard work and passion can lead to success by earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies.

During the day, Mndebele had been a devoted employee in the university's dining hall, ensuring that students were never left hungry. She was, nevertheless, working diligently behind the scenes to obtain her degree.

"It's been quite a tough journey. I have been juggling family, school, work, and my personal life, but I have remained consistent and dedicated," said Mndebele. The graduate added that she had always wanted to graduate from the field of politics.

"My dream has always been to graduate in the field of politics. I first came to Wits in 2012 as part of a service provider, and in 2017, we were insourced. When I became a Wits employee, I gained access to study benefits. Since I couldn't afford the fees before, I took this opportunity to pursue my studies and make my dream a reality."

She said the university played a part in her journey of success.

"The university played a crucial role in my journey, as I wouldn’t have been able to afford the fees without its support. That assistance gave me the strength and determination to overcome challenges.

"Being a Wits graduate instills a sense of endless possibilities and fuels my desire to keep learning," she said.

Mndebele's achievement has been celebrated online, with social media users pointing out how inspirational it is.

Among them was former EFF MP Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi who posted on X: "She did not make age an excuse. She did not make being a kitchen worker an excuse. What more with those among us who make laws, who hold ministerial positions and actually earn a much higher living than she ever did? What is their excuse? Why must they make laws for her?"
