A major collision between cars has taken place on the N3 road near the Chatterton offramp in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service attended to the severe accident on Friday morning.
When emergency personnel arrived at the site, they discovered that two trucks and a bakkie had collided.
Nine patients were seriously injured, with one who remained trapped inside the vehicle.
"Paramedics are currently working diligently to stabilise the injured patients, and with the assistance of Fire and Rescue Services, are utilising specialised rescue equipment to extricate the trapped individual," said the KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service.
They added that once stabilised, all patients will be sent to a neighbouring hospital for additional medical care.
Another horrific accident in the province left two people dead on the N2 near Fairbreeze in Durban on Thursday, November 29.
IPSS Medical Rescue stated that they reacted to reports of a significant head-on accident between a bakkie and a truck on the N2 near Fairbreeze.
Samantha Meyrick, spokesman for IPSS Medical Rescue, stated that the driver and one passenger in the light motor vehicle were confirmed dead on the site.
A third passenger was fortunate to escape with moderate injuries.
"The driver and passenger of the truck sustained minor injuries, and did not require further care." Meyrick said.
This was against the backdrop of the eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba launching the Festive Season Management Plan campaign.
Xaba pointed out that road safety has become a critical component in guaranteeing the City's calm and enjoyable Christmas season.
"Our law enforcement officers will clamp-down on drinking and driving as well as reckless behaviour on our roads.Law enforcement operations, including multidisciplinary roadblocks will be conducted throughout the city to combat all forms of criminality," he said.
