The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has condemned the nomination of Brent Bozell III as the United States (US) Ambassador to South Africa, calling it a provocative and hostile move by President Donald Trump.
The party argues that Bozell's appointment is not a routine diplomatic gesture, but a deliberate attack on South Africa’s sovereignty and an attempt to escalate tensions between the two countries.
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Tambo strongly criticised the nomination, saying: “This nomination is a calculated act of aggression, a blatant declaration of war against the sovereignty, dignity, and aspirations of the South African people.”
The EFF believes that Trump’s decision is aimed at further deepening the rift between the two nations, rather than working to repair the strained relationship.
Bozell, the founder of the Media Research Center, is known for his conservative views and his vocal opposition to progressive ideals. The EFF describes him as a defender of right-wing extremism and an advocate for divisive narratives. The party also asserts that Bozell’s long-standing ties to white supremacist ideologies make him unsuitable for the ambassadorial position.
Tambo pointed to recent actions by the Trump administration, such as freezing financial aid to South Africa, expelling former Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, and falsely accusing the country of anti-white policies, as evidence of a broader strategy to destabilise South Africa.
The EFF views Bozell’s nomination as a continuation of this hostility and an attempt to install someone who will champion Trump’s divisive agenda instead of fostering diplomatic relations.
The EFF also highlighted troubling aspects of Bozell’s personal history, including his son’s involvement in the January 6th Capitol insurrection and his grandfather’s violent actions against an abortion clinic.
“Bozell is a white supremacist whose values stand in direct opposition to the principles of equality, justice, and liberation that define South Africa’s struggle and identity, said Tambo.
According to the EFF, the appointment of Bozell is an insult to South Africa’s democracy and the memory of its anti-apartheid heroes.
The party is calling on the South African government to reject Bozell’s credentials and demand that the United States reconsider the nomination.
“We cannot allow Trump, through Bozell or any other means, to undermine our nation’s progress or dictate our future,''said Tambo.
