Unhappy minority parties in Ekurhuleni council have launched a motion of no confidence against Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, accusing him of financial mismanagement and neglecting council directives.
In a document seen by IOL, the Independent Citizen Movement (ICM) said the motion was filed because Xhakaza has worsened the dire state of Ekurhuleni.
The party stated that Xhakaza failed to fulfil his statutory obligations and leadership responsibilities, including but not limited to leadership failures, financial mismanagement as well as neglecting recommendations from the extraordinary council meetings.
Xhakaza is accused of unreasonable delays in the budget approval process, poor expenditure of conditional grants, and non-payment of service providers.
He allegedly undertook four international trips within six months of assuming office without informing and adequately reporting back to the Council and failed to appoint an acting Mayor in his absence.
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) supported the motion to remove Xhakaza. It will be tabled this month.
The Independent Citizen Movement (ICM) stressed that the city needed a capable and visionary mayor who prioritised good governance, financial prudence, and strategic leadership to steer the City toward sustainable growth and development.
This comes a week after the speaker Nthabiseng Tshivhenga’s motion of no confidence was put to rest by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
The IFP withdrew the motion just before it could be heard in council, saying they needed to discuss the matter with other parties.
Upon adoption, ICM requested Tshivhenga to convene an extraordinary council meeting within seven days to elect a new city mayor.
IOL has reached out to Xhakaza and his party, the ANC for comment but to no avail.
