A police sergeant stationed in Wolmaransstad, Leepile Mtimkulu, 46, has been remanded in custody following his court appearance on March 10, for stabbing his girlfriend, Dikeledi Ingrid Serake, 40, to death.
His next court appearance is set for March 14 at the Wolmaransstad Magistrate’s Court.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said that the incident occurred on March 8, when Mtimkulu allegedly stabbed Serake in the neck with a knife.
"The victim was declared dead on the scene at Tswelelang Location, Wolmaransstad," said Mokgwabone.
"Following the incident, the accused handed himself over to the police."
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is now handling the investigation.
Acting police commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, expressed his disappointment over the crime, saying that it is disheartening to see a police officer being arrested for a Gender-Based Violence-related incident, which was committed during International Women’s Day by someone whom the public is looking to for protection.
He also encouraged police members to seek professional help rather than resorting to violence, urging them to use the professional services of the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) rather than resorting to violence.
The accused remains in custody as the investigation continues.
