Johannesburg - Volkswagen has extended its Polo hatch range with two frugal new engine options in the form of a 1.0 TSI and 1.4 TDI.
The former is a Bluemotion model, which means that it comes with a whole suite of aerodynamic improvements too, although the big news is under the bonnet. Here you'll find an advanced new 1-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine, rated at 70kW and 160Nm. With combined fuel consumption of 4.2 litres per 100km, VW claims it's the most frugal vehicle in its class.
It's not the most affordable though, at R235 800, although it is rather well equipped. Standard features include a Composition Media colour touch-screen audio system, Bluetooth connectivity and 15-inch alloy wheels.
The Polo range welcomes a new turbodiesel engine into the fold too, which has also been downsized and de-cylindered.
The new 1.4-litre three-cylinder is available in two states of tune: 55kW/210Nm and 77kW/250Nm. According to claims, the two versions sip 4.1 and 4.2 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, respectively.
Like the TSI Bluemotion, the TDI engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The 55kW Trendline version is yours for R223 500 while the 77kW Highline costs R252 000 and the 77kW CrossPolo sells for R260 000.
