Renault has brought the Vatican right into the 21st century by presenting His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI with two battery-powered Popemobiles.
They're based on the Kangoo Maxi ZE and were developed in association with French coachbuilder Gruau. Each is 4.6 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, and has a 44kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery that gives it a range - driven at suitably stately Papal speed - of about 170km.
Each seats only four people, in two standard front seats and two separate, luxury rear seats. Each also has an opening roof and removable rear side windows for ceremonial occasions, hinged rear side doors and electrically folding door steps.
The two Holy Kangoos were presented to His Holiness on Wednesday at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo by Renault boss Carlos Ghosn, as a direct response, he said, to the sustainable development message of the Vatican and His Holiness.
The first, in plain white with the Papal coat of arms on the doors, will be used by the Pope in and around Castel Gandolfo.
The second is finished in blue with a white and yellow stripe down each side, and will be used by the Vatican City Corps of Gendarmerie for the Pope's security.
