Flower power - New Beetle drops top

You get masculine cars and not-so-masculine cars and then right at the very opposite end of the spectrum you'll find VW's Beetle Convertible.

Like the latest Beetle Coupe, the Convertible has, in VW's words, "a sportier and more dynamic silhouette" thanks to its flatter roof line and more upright windscreen. Of course, it's still more flower power than muscle car and its target audience are, no doubt, going to love it exactly the way it is.

Just like its two predecessors, the new Convertible has a traditional soft top and lowering it takes just over 10 seconds at the push of a button.

The interior was designed to seat four 'full-size' adults and offers style in the form of a body-colour dashboard and other retro-inspired design cues.

On the engine front, European models offer 77kW 1.2 TSI, 118kW 1.4 TSI and 147kW 2.0 TSI turbopetrols and a 103kW 2-litre TDI turbodiesel.

Sadly, our local VWSA contact has informed us that there are no plans to bring the Beetle Convertible to South Africa at this stage.
