Uitenhage - Volkswagen’s aging Scirocco line-up has been given a refresh that includes brand new engines for the base and middle models, the latter perked up further with some racy new styling features and a GTS badge.
At the bottom of the SA line-up, the previous 118kW 1.4 TSI turbopetrol engine makes way for a 132kW/280Nm 2-litre TSI. Paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, the motor gets the Scirocco from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds, according to Volkswagen, and sips 6.1 l/100km on the unrealistic combined cycle.
The middle model gets the latest version of the Golf GTI's 2-litre TSI engine, which brings outputs up from 155kW/280Nm to 162kW/350Nm and it's only available in the new GTS trim, and with VW's six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. VW quotes a 6.9-second 0-100km/h sprint and fuel consumption of 6.4 l/100km on the combined cycle.
GO-FAST STRIPES!
Harking back to the original Scirocco GTS of 1982, this new version has clearly earned its body stripes, which come along with R-Line bumpers, side sill extensions, 18-inch wheels, black mirror caps and an R-style roof spoiler. The body stripes cost extra though, but you do also get the choice of six body colours: Deep Black, Indium Grey, Urano Grey, Pure White, Oryx White and Flash Red (in which case the decals are black).
The GTS comes with its fair share of feel-special interior bits, including a sports steering wheel with red seams, a golf ball gear knob, Black Piano Lacquer decorative décor inlays, stainless steel pedals and plenty of contrasting red trim on various components.
Also fitted, for the first time in the Scirocco, is VW's latest Composition Media infotainment system linked to a 5.8-inch colour touch-screen with proximity sensing.
