DURBAN: Ten young performers from Team Go! Durban Academy walked off with a slew of medals including a gold prize for group performance at the recent South African Championships of Performing Arts which was held in Rustenburg, North West.
The pupils from Inanda will now represent SA against 70 other countries in the World Championship of Performing Arts which will be held on July 18 to August 1, 2022 in the US.
The head of the performing arts division of Go! Durban Academy, Des Govender said the young performers have made the academy, their schools and the city proud.
“We are beyond delighted for our supper-talented youngsters who did their Academy, schools and the city proud. The competition was stiff with entrants coming from all nine provinces but the team performed their hearts out. They were gracious, well mannered and respectful,” said Govender.
He said it was their first time competing in the championships.
The head of the eThekwini Transport Authority Thami Manyathi said the municipality was pleased by the group’s success.
“Their achievements are proof that the team worked tirelessly over the last three years to build this programme into the successful youth development academy that it is today,” said Manyathi.
He said the young stars are ambassadors not only for the city but for the province as well.
The pupils attend the musical theatre academies based at the Go! Durban Cycle Academies in Green Corridors sites at Inanda, KwaMashu and KwaDabeka. The academy is an extra mural activity teaching performing arts, leadership and life skills.
