Let’s face it ladies, we tend to hold onto skincare products in the same way we hold onto clothes we no longer wear.

You can have a shelf full of products but do you really need all of it? Does all of it even still work for you?

Now that it’s spring, many people are spring cleaning their homes and even their wardrobes.

This is a good time to look at your skincare products and give them a spring clean as well.

But how do you know which products to keep and which to trash?

Check for expiration dates

If a product has an expiration date printed on it, that’s your first clue.

Many brands provide clear indicators of when their formulations are no longer safe for use.

Don't be afraid to toss these products without a second thought; your skin will thank you for it.

Assess consistency and scent

Another important factor to consider is the physical state of your products.

Have they become thick or clumpy?

Perhaps they've separated, or the scent has changed drastically?

These alterations often signal that the product has deteriorated and may no longer be effective or safe.

Regularly inspecting the condition of your skincare items can prevent potential skin reactions.

Understand the Period After Opening symbol

Take a closer look at the labels, and you might notice the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol: an open jar icon with a number followed by the letter M.

This indicates how many months a product can be safely used after it has been opened.

For example, 12M means it can be used for up to 12 months after initial opening.

Familiarising yourself with this symbol helps you maintain a timely rotation of your skincare routine.

Consider how long you’ve had it

If you stumble upon a product and can’t remember when or where it originated, it’s time to let it go.

Most skincare products retain their efficacy for up to a year once opened, with certain exceptions.

Don’t cling to aged items that could pose a risk to your complexion; be proactive and cleanse your collection.
