After months of teasing the song “Amalanga Awafani”, the track finally dropped on streaming platforms on Tuesday, but there was just one thing wrong - everyone featured on the song, including DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality, was credited - except vocalist Samthing Soweto.
After a full day of trending online as fans defended him, Samthing Soweto was added to the credits of Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy’s song “Amalanga Awafani”.
When the news of the release was published, Samthing Soweto reacted with a heartbroken emoji, over his name and image not being on the credits and song art cover.
The heartbroken emoji was enough for fans to go to war online over Samthing Soweto not being credited on the song but his vocals being used. This opened up the always hot topic around music rights.
Samthing Soweto is yet to comment on the support he received from his fans for not being credited on the song.
The release of the song was reportedly delayed because Samthing Soweto wanted a share of the master and ownership rights for the song.
"People need to learn how to share masters. We don't work for each other, we work with each other," said Samthing Soweto in July when his fans asked him about the release date of the song.
As the public weighed in on the debate, DJ Maphorisa went live on Instagram and aired out his frustrations over Samthing Soweto delaying the song’s release because of his demands and their decision to release the song without crediting Samthing Soweto.
Spitting fire, DJ Maphorisa told fans to stay with their “sh*** Samthing Soweto”, and called him “not business minded”.
“Stay with him and his sh*tty attitude, we’ll see who he works with because everywhere he goes, he ruins things.
“He’s just like Sir Trill, they plant rotten potatoes and ruin things everywhere they go. They know nothing because they are not business minded.”
