Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the “Shimza x Friends” music festival at the Durban Exhibition Centre.
The event, powered by Extreme, attracted large crowds of avid afro tech and house music lovers, myself included!
With an impressive line-up boasting internationally acclaimed performers (several of whom contribute to an overwhelming presence within my music playlists), I had been anticipating these live performances from the second I heard that they would be coming to Durban for a show.
Thankfully, it was worth the wait; I was thoroughly impressed with all of the performers I was lucky enough to witness perform live.
The festival confirmed its leadership role in the realm of house music, illuminating the scene with a top-tier stage set-up, an assembly of the finest artists, flawless execution, and a picturesque location.

The best performances for me were by Young Stunna, Helen Ting, and Shimza. If I had a million rands and could host my own show, I would be sure to book them.
I loved what they did. I loved their music delivery and their stage presence was incredible.
Their performances were well orchestrated especially that of Shimza’s, which was accompanied by stage pyrotechnics elevating our moods. As a brand of the festival, the DJ honestly wanted the crowd to get their money’s worth.
As someone who is known for hosting remarkable music events, Independent Media Lifestyle caught up with the Tembisa-born star on his love for music and hosting events.
Shimza said the inspiration to start his own shows came from a deep desire to create unique experiences that go beyond just performing.
He said he has always believed in the power of music to bring people together and create memorable moments.
“As an artist, I wanted to have full creative control and bring my vision to life. It started with small, intimate gatherings and gradually grew into larger events as I realised the impact I could have by curating not just a performance but a complete experience for my audience,” said Shimza.
He said he has managed to do everything to such an amazing standard all the time because of his dedication to the craft.
“I’m fortunate to have a great team that shares my vision and work ethic. We all collaborate closely to ensure every aspect of the event, from the music to the production, meets our high standards.
“I stay hands-on and continually push myself to innovate and improve. It’s about balancing creativity with discipline and never settling for anything less than excellence,” said Shimza.

Asked what makes an event successful, he said: “It is one where the audience leaves with a sense of joy and fulfilment. It’s about creating an immersive experience that resonates with people on a personal level.
“From the atmosphere and music to the overall execution, everything should come together seamlessly to create a memorable experience.
“Engaging with the audience, delivering high-quality performances, and creating an environment where people feel connected and excited are key factors.”
Shimza said people can expect more innovative events and collaborations that push the boundaries of live performances. He said he is also exploring new music and creative concepts to keep things fresh and exciting.
Commenting on the partnership, the team at Extreme said: “Partnering with the Shimza for the event was a natural choice for us. Shimza is a visionary in the music industry, and his events are known for their high energy and unique experiences.
“This collaboration aligns perfectly with our commitment to supporting and celebrating innovative and impactful cultural experiences.
“By being part of this show, we’re not just promoting our brand, but also contributing to a vibrant and dynamic event that resonates with our audience."
“We are reinforcing our commitment to supporting exceptional experiences and showcasing our brand’s dedication to being at the forefront of cultural and entertainment trends,” they said.
