Rapper, TV presenter and businesswoman Boity Thulo recently sat down to do her first-ever podcast interview.
She visited the “L-Tido” podcast and delved into her life in Potchefstroom and went on to clear up some of the misconceptions about her that are out there.
When L-Tido asked her why she’s been “low-key”, she replied: “It’s not that I’ve been keeping a low profile, it’s just how things have been going and how they unfolded … It’s not like I’m trying to hide, I think I was just in a very calm, chilled era of my life.”
Then she brought up some fond memories about growing up in Potchefstroom with her maternal grandparents who had a big impact on the kind of person she has grown to become.
Speaking about her father, she said: “My parents split when I was about 3 or 4. My dad went on to have other kids. Most of the people from the hood know that dynamic of their dad not being around … I wanted to build a relationship with him for me.”
Boity shared more about the spiritual journey she underwent a few years ago.
“I would see things and the next thing they would be happening … I was that kind of child … A few years ago, I met a lady and we had such a candid and vivid conversation about the calling and when she explained what it is, in that moment I said ‘that’s what I have’ .
“She said she can guide me and open me up to that space and because I was always such a spiritually curious person, I tried it … That’s where the journey started.”
She said that the experience had “cracked” her open to a spiritual realm and that it was the best thing that has happened to her. She also mentioned that her part (what her ancestors required of her) has been completed.
“I know the public will be confused and ask why am I not a gobela, but that was not my journey.”
Boity said that she feels like in some small way she has opened the doors for others with callings to share it publicly without being judged.
“I had to be very grounded with the fact that I am going out with this information because that’s part of the calling … It shocked me to my core, but at the same time also made me very steadfast, very strong, and to just trust in the process …
“It also opened up such a vast space for people to be like ‘yeah, even me, I also went through this journey’. I feel like, in some small way, I opened the space for people to feel more comfortable about talking about that journey.”
The rapper also opened up about going under the knife to have a breast reduction.
“I had my breasts done … There were reports that I had a BBL (Brazilian butt lift). I don’t need a BBL. I don’t want a BBL … I want people to understand that you can do whatever you want with your body …
“If you have the means to be able to make a change to your body, why the f*** wouldn’t you go and do it?”
She also disclosed that her breast reduction surgery cost between R60k to R100k.
