Durban — Someone gathering firewood stumbled on the bloodied remains of a woman who had a stab wound to her neck in Verulam over the weekend.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said that the bloodied remains of an unidentified woman were discovered on a footpath in the vicinity of Spring Road in Umdloti Heights on Saturday morning.
Balram said that someone was gathering firewood along the pathway when she made the discovery. She fled to a business premises in the vicinity and reported her findings to employees, who contacted Rusa for assistance.
“Reaction officers and Rusa medics were immediately dispatched and arrived on scene at approximately 6.24am. The body of a female was discovered in a prone position on an unpaved pathway. She sustained a single stab wound to her neck,” Balram said.
“Her dress was soaked in blood and raised above her waist. It could not be confirmed if she was raped.”
Balram said that the circumstances surrounding the murder are unknown at this stage.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that on Saturday morning, Verulam police were called to Umdloti Heights where a body of a 29-year-old woman was found with a stab wound.
“A case of murder was reported at Verulam SAPS for investigation.”
