Durban — KwaZulu-Natal police have reported that they arrested more than 2 100 suspects in a week.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said more than 2 100 were arrested in KZN during weekly operations.

“During the past week starting on September 5 and ending on September 11, over 2 100 individuals were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal during police operations,” Naicker said.

“Crime-combating operations carried out across all 11 districts in the province resulted in 2 165 people finding themselves behind bars for various offences.”

“These arrests include 118 for robberies and 84 for burglaries. Police arrested 407 people found in possession of drugs, 34 in possession of firearms and 52 in possession of the stolen property. In the same period, 579 were arrested for assaults, 56 for murder and 61 for rape. Police also detained 175 for shoplifting, 117 for theft and 76 for malicious damage to property. Ten were arrested for theft of motor vehicles and nine for carjacking.”

Deputy provincial commissioner Major-General Phumelele Makoba welcomed the arrests and commended police officers for going the extra mile to ensure the perpetrators of crime were brought to book.
