The parliamentary portfolio committee on sport, arts and culture has extended its condolences to the family and friends of veteran actor Connie Chiume.
Chiume died on Tuesday at the age of 72.
Committee chairperson Joe McGluwa said they had learnt with shock of the passing of Chiume.
“The passing of Sis Connie is a real loss to the industry, and a loss the industry will struggle to cope with. It will take a long time to find a mother figure to all those who have crossed paths with her,” he said.
“Sis Connie built a name for herself in theatre and mostly television productions. A typical all-rounder well versed in her style of switching with ease on many South African languages, a trick few actors can master.”
Born in Welkom, Chiume began her illustrious acting career with roles in “Porgy and Bess”, “Ipi Ntombi” and “Little Shop of Horrors”.
She featured in many prominent and illustrious productions, including “Gomora” and “Black Panther”.
“Sis Connie’s passing was sudden but she will remain in our hearts, and for what she has achieved, the sector will forever be rewarded in such a manner as to benefit young actors,” McGluwa added.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie extended his condolences.
McKenzie said Chuime’s performances brought joy, inspiration, and a sense of pride to countless South Africans.
“She was more than an actress; she was a beacon of strength, resilience and grace. Mam’ Connie’s contribution to the arts not only entertained, she inspired, educated and uplifted communities throughout our country,” he said.
“As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her life and legacy. May her memory continue to inspire future generations of artists. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the outpouring of love and support from all those who cherished her,” said McKenzie.
