A trainee Metro Police officer appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday after his arrest in Delft for the possession of illegal ammunition at a house linked to an alleged member of the Horrible gang.

The Delft SAPS Crime Prevention Unit arrested the officer and another suspect in Tamarisk Street on Saturday. During a search of their vehicle, police found and seized 45 rounds of .38 Special ammunition.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie confirmed the arrests and said two suspects aged 31 and 27 years were taken into custody an appeared in court.

“Members attached to the Delft SAPS Crime Prevention unit acted on information and searched the suspects and their vehicle in Tamarisk, Delft on Saturday, March 29. The area is a renowned gang hotspot.

"The members discovered and seized 45 .38 Special rounds of ammunition which were found on them and subsequently arrested both suspects, aged 31 and 27 for the illegal possession of ammunition."

City of Cape Town Metro Police spokesperson Ruth Solomons said they were aware of the arrest.

“We are aware of the arrest and will fully co-operate with the SAPS investigation. An internal investigation is also underway in conjunction with the criminal matter and the City will ensure appropriate action is taken. For any further information, please approach SAPS."

Delft Community Police Forum (CPF) spokesperson Francois de Bruin described the incident as "very disturbing." 

"Yes, it raises red flags when our Law Enforcement officers are arrested but, if evidence points to those implicated and if found guilty, they should be removed from these trusted positions."
