Durban — As summer approaches, the allure of sun-soaked days and beach getaways beckons, but it's crucial to remember the importance of safeguarding our skin from harmful UV rays. Dr Cebi Sibisi, founder of Dr Cebi Dermatology in Durban, shares invaluable insights on how to enjoy the season while protecting our most extensive organ—our skin.

1. Sunscreen is non-negotiable

Dr Sibisi emphasises that sunscreen is an essential part of daily skincare, stating, “Even on overcast days, UV rays can damage the skin, accelerating ageing and increasing the risk of skin cancer.”

She advised the use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30, particularly for children. Broad-spectrum sunscreens offer protection against both UVA rays, responsible for ageing, and UVB rays, which can cause sunburn and skin cancers.

For optimal results, apply sunscreen liberally each morning and reapply every two to three hours, particularly after swimming or sweating. Sibisi encourages selecting sunscreens enriched with antioxidants like Pycnogenol, Ferulic Acid, and Vitamins C and E for added protection.

2. Dress for the sun

“Protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and rash vests are your best friends during summer,” Sibisi said.

These barriers complement sunscreen use, providing a more comprehensive defence against the sun’s rays.

3. Timing is everything

Minimising sun exposure during peak hours—between 10 am and 4 pm—is essential as this is when UV radiation is at its most potent. If outdoor activities are unavoidable, seek shade or use an umbrella as an additional barrier against UV rays.

4. Hydrate inside and out

Sibisi underscored the significance of hydration: “Hydrate from the inside out by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.”

Maintaining hydration is crucial for skin elasticity and overall health, especially during hot summer months.

5. Special care for sensitive skin

For those with photosensitive conditions such as rosacea or melasma, Sibisi suggested that oral antioxidants like Polypodium leucotomos can provide further protection against free radicals. Additionally, she recommended oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreens for individuals with oily or acne-prone skin.

6. One sunburn is one too many

The dermatologist warns, “A single sunburn can double your risk of developing melanoma later in life. Skin damage accumulates over time, starting with the very first sunburn, so taking proactive measures is essential for future health.”

7. After-sun care

Post-exposure care is just as vital. Sibisi advises rinsing off chlorine or seawater after swimming and applying a moisturiser to replenish hydration, which aids in repairing and soothing the skin after sun exposure.

“It is more than just sunburn we need to protect against; sun protection is essential for preventing sun damage, premature ageing, and pigmentation, as well as reducing your risk of skin cancer.

“By incorporating these practical tips into your daily routine, you can revel in a fun, sun-safe summer while ensuring your skin remains healthy and radiant,” concludes Sibisi.
